The best remedy for a New Year's hangover: the ice-cold North Sea. Be there when 120 swimmers plunge into the water on January 1st in Wenningstedt. The partly absurd outfits of the participants do not help against the cold, but definitely lifts the mood. If you want to join the swim yourself, you must register in advance at the Tourismus Service Wenningstedt.
In February, one of the most popular traditions on Sylt takes place. During the "Biikebrennen", the people of Sylt throw torches onto huge piles of wood scattered all over the island. The "Biike" consists of christmas trees from the previous christmas. With this ritual, the people of Sylt drive away winter. Afterwards, people meet in the island's restaurants to eat kale.
At Easter time and during the autumn vacations, Sylt is all about kids' fun and family time. From the end of March to the end of April and in October the family weeks on Sylt take place. The program includes nature adventures, workshops, reading sessions and lots of hands-on activities. You can book and reserve many events from the comfort of your own home.
The sports elite meets on Sylt. The Beach Polo World Cup, the Kitesurf World Cup and the Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup are just a few top-class sporting events that take place on the island. But the most spectacular is probably the Sylt Sailing Week at the end of July/beginning of August. With the Super Sail Tour, the Sansibar Race and The Hobie World Cat, three breathtaking races are on the schedule. All around, visitors can expect a colorful music and celebration programm.
Always in June it roars on Sylt. At the traditional Harley-Davidson meeting, around 700 Harley enthusiasts gather on heavy machines. The highlight is the island tour. Those who own one of the cult motorcycles can warm up the night before at the Summertime Party in Westerland's casino.
The longest night of the year is welcomed by the people of Sylt with a night hike. They start on the first day in the evening at the tourism service Hörnum. In a festive torchlight run, you will walk around the southern tip of the island to the eastern beach. Later you celebrate in the restaurant south cape against the morning. If you still haven't had enough, you can join the bonfire with live music at Buhne 16 in the evening of the second day - for the second long night.
There are countless concerts on Sylt. From great classical and pop events like Musik am Meer to Kampen Jazz, the Sylt Chamber Music Festival and Arias by the Sea. Our highlight: the Sylt Open Air.Next year, stars such as the Fantastischen Vier, Tim Bendzko and Alle Farben are expected. Shuttle buses are available to the concert site at Sylt Airport.
At the end of July, it's finally that time again: from July 31 to August 4, 2024, polo will return to Sylt, turning Keitum into a hotspot for international polo sports for five summer days. Six polo teams with over 120 horses and top-tier exhibitors in their white pagoda village will welcome hundreds of guests on the expansive playing grounds. On all tournament days, the Berenberg German Polo Masters will captivate the audience with a diverse program for both young and old visitors in the beautiful holiday atmosphere of Sylt.
